Thomas Leeper Myrtle Beach Files: How to Stay Safe while Traveling

While Thomas Leeper was in Myrtle Beach, he decided he wanted to travel the world. If you want to do the same—or are a casual traveler, at least—then you should know that while traveling is fun, it also puts you in places that are foreign and unfamiliar. Preparing for your journey shouldn’t just be about bringing the right clothes, but also involve preparing for your safety. If you’re traveling to an entirely unfamiliar locale, such as one in a different continent, then the first thing you need to prepare for are possible disasters. These could be natural ones, such as weather problems, or manmade, such as road accidents. If you have a chronic condition, such as hypertension or diabetes, make sure to always have your medication with you, in case you don’t know where to get them in the country you’re visiting. Set up an itinerary and follow it. If you are with a group, stay with them to avoid trouble. Prepare a certain amount of the local currency and when you can, familiarize yourself with the local language. It’s important that you act confidently and like a local. You know what they say: when in Rome, do as the Romans do. It’s a cliché, but clichés are usually true. Additionally, make sure to register your trips with the local consulates and embassies. Most importantly, do your research beforehand. Make yourself familiar with local weather patterns, food, and dangerous animals. Read about the political climate and learn some of the local expressions. Know where you can get help should anything untoward happen during the trip. Knowledge is power, especially when you’re in a foreign place. Not all trips end up like Thomas Leeper’s Myrtle Beach vacation, so you need to be a responsible traveler. Look forward to a great experience, but don’t forget to prepare for the worst.
